Spectrophotogrammetry is the combination of two complementary measurement techniques:
- Photogrammetry, which concerns determination of the 3D geometric properties of objects from photographic images, and recently, also by using active sensing methods.
- Spectrometry, which refers to the measurement of radiation intensity as a function of wavelength.
The Spectrophotogrammetry group investigates the utilisation of the 3D geometry, high-resolution photogrammetric images and object reflectance signatures in various applications related to the changing earth, such as mapping, environmental monitoring, security and climate change research. Our approach is the rigorous consideration of all aspects in the data processing chain: sensor, calibration, data collection, georeferencing and radiometric correction, object and applications. Currently we are focusing the passive sensing methods, but we are also interested in fusing passive and active methods together. We are extremely interested in co-operating with different applications.
25.9.2012: Water monitoring campaings using the novel hyperspectral camera at Petäjärvi in Sjökulla, Kirkkonummi. At this time the camera was installed in the small aircraft belonging to the Lentokuva Vallas Oy. Campaign belongs to the MMEA-project of TEKES. Co-operation campaign of FGI, Luode Oy and Lentokuva Vallas Oy.

1.9.2012: Dr Maria Gritsevich joins to the research group.
1.9.2012: New reseach project funded by Academy of Finland begins: "Electromagnetic wave scattering in a complex random medium". Principal investigator is Dos. Jouni Peltoniemi.
9-10.2012: Eija Honkavaara lectures at Aalto university a course entitled "Photogrammetry in Practice".

6.8.2012: Our Recearcher Excellence Grant proposal "Traceable unmanned airborne vehicle (UAV) based reflectance measurements" was accepted in the EMRP-project ENV04 MetEOC.

31.5.2012: Research group purchased a novel hyperspectral light-weight hyperspectral prototype camera, suitable for light UAV platforms. Camera was developed by VTT Technical Research Center Finland.
28-May-2012: Eija Honkavaara and Lauri Markelin are delivering a EuroSDR Eduserv course "Radiometric performance of Digital Photogrammetric Cameras and Airborne Laser Scanners" jointly by the Vienna University of Technology. 28-May-2012: An UAV campaign at the MTT Agrifood Research Finland test site in Vihti. Co-operation with VTT Technical Research Center Finland, MTT Agrifood Research Finland and Unviersity of Jyväskylä. Imaging instruments are the novel lightweight CIR and hyperspectral cameras developed by the VTT. The objective is the research in precision agriculture.
