| GEODETIC MEASUREMENTS AT THE PASMAJÄRVI AND NUOTTAVAARA FAULTS by M. Takalo, P. Rouhiainen, J. Jokela, H. Ruotsalainen, J. Ahola Abstract The Pasmajärvi and Nuottavaara faults in Lapland are according to the geologists post-glacial, but their current state is unclear. To study possible secular motions or indications of them, several geodetic networks were established since 1987. In Pasmajärvi, near the Ruokojärvi village, two miniature networks for angle and length and for precise levelling measurements were constructed in 1987-1990. To examine the possible mass redistribution in Pasmajärvi area, a gravimetric test line between Ruokojärvi and Liikamaa was established 1987. In 1991, a GPS network near the Nuottavaara village was established and a year later a network for precise levelling. Several measurements have been carried out in 1987-2002. The precise levellings did not yield any significant vertical motions in the Pasmajärvi fault. Nor the angle and length measurements revealed any horizontal motions and the gravimetric observations indicated any significant change in gravity. The GPS measurements in the Nuottavaara fault did not either reveal any motions of bedrock. Consequently, the current state of the Pasmajärvi and Nuottavaara faults might not be active. |
